The Agonizing Executions Via The Brazen Bull

It is no doubt if you are reading this page then you are curious in the morbidities that taint the evolution of humanity but be warned that specific triggers include execution and torture of men, women, and children, for today we discuss arguably the worst torture method of recorded civilization- the brazen bull.

Somewhere between 570 and 554 BC (1) , Perillos of Athens pitched the idea of this invention to the cruel mannered Phalaris who despite being a notable tyrant reportedly said, ‘his words revolted me. I loathed the thought of such ingenious cruelty and resolved to punish the artificer in kind’ and consequently, Perillos met the Gods within his own invention. However, Phalaris, who invested in this invention, was also have said to have met his end in the same fashion. But what method of execution could have been this awful?

The brazen bull was, well, a huge copper bull with a door upon which the convicted man should climb inside. A fire would then be lit under the bull iso that the condemned would roast alive, their contorted screams and wails of agony being funnelled out in such a way as to sound like a pained animal whilst smoke streamed artistically out of the bull’s nostrils.

Perhaps it could be said that those two victims were tortured by their own hands as the inventor and the investor of the method, but the idea gets more twisted upon the notion that others may have been executed like this, specifically various Christians who were known to have been penalized under Roman rule at the time.

One of note would be St Eustace. Him, his wife and his two children are stated in many religious sources to have met their fate in this incomprehensible manor under Emperor Hadrian. Perhaps today all we can hope for is that this truly is a tale that has been warped by time.
